Like many gemstones, labradorite is a mineral – a feldspar mineral, to be exact.
 
It’s classified as an intermediate to calcic member of the plagioclase series of minerals.
 
As with all plagioclase members of the mineral family, labradorite has a triclinic crystal system.

This is because labradorite is made from calcium sodium, while moonstone is made of potassium sodium. 
 
Labradorite is also known for projecting a vast spectrum of colors, whereas moonstone is most commonly found to display just blue and white, and occasionally pink.
